.... Hon. Munachim Alozie Tables Petition Against 200% Hike in Electricity Bills

In a bold move on the floor of the House of Representatives this afternoon, Hon. Munachim Ikechi Alozie, the lawmaker representing Obingwa, Ugwunagbo, and Osisioma Federal Constituency of Abia State, raised the alarm over what he described as "extortionist and outrageous billing practices" by Aba Power Electric Limited.

The lawmaker accused the distribution company of imposing estimated electricity bills that are nearly 200% higher than what is charged by other Distribution Companies (DISCOs) across Nigeria.

Describing the actions of Aba Power as "economic sabotage" and a "clear abuse of monopoly," Hon. Alozie urged the House to compel the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to immediately order Aba Power to harmonize its billing structure with other DISCOs in the country.

"This level of exploitation is unacceptable. The people of Aba and its environs are suffering under unfair electricity billing. We cannot watch as a private firm cripples our local economy through arbitrary charges," he declared.

Hon. Alozie further submitted a petition signed by concerned electricity consumers in the commercial city of Aba, calling for urgent legislative intervention.

The federal lawmaker also called for a public inquiry through the House Committee on Public Petitions, requesting that the committee embark on a fact-finding visit to Aba to interact directly with the affected consumers.

According to him, a town hall meeting should be convened in Aba, bringing together residents, stakeholders, and officials of Aba Power Electric Limited, to openly discuss grievances and propose lasting solutions to the crisis.

The call for probe and regulation of Aba Power's billing system is coming at a time when Nigerians are already grappling with rising electricity tariffs and economic hardship.

The petition has since been referred to the appropriate committee for further legislative action, sparking renewed hope for many residents of Aba who have long lamented the controversial billing system of the local power provider.

As the National Assembly begins its process of inquiry, all eyes are now on NERC and the management of Aba Power to respond to the weighty allegations.
