Abia Discovers 55 Heritage Sites Across the State, Unveils Plans to Boost Tourism

Abia State is taking bold steps to boost tourism by identifying 55 heritage sites and planning a major revamp of the National War Museum Umuahia. The government is also working on electricity reforms and road infrastructure. Read the full details here!
Abia State Government (ABSG) has identified over 55 viable heritage sites across the state and announced plans to revamp them to boost tourism and economic development. The state has also entered into a partnership with the federal government to renovate the National War Museum Umuahia and Ojukwu Bunker into world-class tourism destinations.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the week's State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti. He revealed that the discoveries were made by the State Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy during an extensive heritage exploration tour across Abia.

Ulochukwu Cave in Alayi, Bende LGA - A natural wonder with historical and cultural significance.

Mazi Okorie Orji's Compound in Arochukwu - A site known for its deep historical roots.

Ntugbo in Oloko, Ikwuano LGA - The location where participants of the famous Aba Women's Riot of 1929 were tried.

"These sites will be reactivated and preserved for their historical significance and their potential to attract global tourists,ÔÇØ Prince Kanu stated.
He further announced that the Abia State Government, through the Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, will collaborate with the federal government to upgrade the National War Museum Umuahia and Ojukwu Bunker, making them world-class tourist destinations.
"In the same vein, the state is in discussions for the establishment of a five-star hotel in Umuahia to complement these tourism initiatives. These efforts are geared towards making Abia a major tourism hub in Nigeria,ÔÇØ he added.
Abia's Electricity Revolution: 60% Stake in EEDC

Speaking on the recently signed Abia Electricity Bill, Commissioner Kanu described it as a groundbreaking law that positions Abia ahead of many states in Nigeria. He noted that Governor Otti's administration is set to fulfill its promise of establishing a reliable power ecosystem that will enhance industrialization.
"With the planned signing of an MoU to acquire a 60% stake in Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Abia will not only provide electricity to the remaining eight LGAs in Abia Central and Abia North but also wheel power to other states in the South-East,ÔÇØ he explained.
Road Infrastructure Development Underway

On road infrastructure, Prince Kanu reassured that all contractors are working diligently to complete major road projects before the rainy season. He announced that about seven roads under the state's direct labor project are near completion and will be commissioned soon. These roads include:

Tourism and Cultural Promotions: Private Sector Involvement Encouraged

Contributing to the discussion, the Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Mr. Matthew Ekwuribe, emphasized that Abia is rich in tourism potential and urged private investors to tap into the sector.
He also announced the introduction of an Igbo cultural program, "Oge Omenala", which airs on BCA and Real FM Radio every Wednesday from 11 AM - 12 PM. The program is designed to promote Igbo traditions and heritage.
State Government's Commitment to Economic Growth
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, was also present at the briefing, reinforcing the administration's dedication to economic development and historical preservation.
