ABIA [Isuikwuato]: Funeral Rites For The Traditional Ruler Of Umuasua Autonomous Community Unveiled

The funeral arrangement of the traditional ruler of Umuasua Autonomous Community, in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, His Royal Majesty, Eze Dr. Godwin Madubuike Ugbam, Omeroha II of Umuasua has been announced.

His funeral arrangement is below;

Thursday, May 27 - service of songs.

Time: 6PM at Eze's palace, Eziukwu compound, Ugwuogu, Umuasua.

Friday, May 28 - Burial/internment.

Time : 8AM- Lying in state at Isuikwuato Local Government office.

9AM- Lying in state at Eze's palace, Eziukwu compound, Ugwuogu, Umuasua.

10AM- Funeral service at Umuasua primary school, opposite Isuikwuato Local Government office.

Internment follows at Eze's palace, Eziukwu compound, Ugwuogu, Umuasua.

HRM Eze Dr. Godwin Madubuike Ugbam, (Omeroha II of Umuasua) - FRCS, FMCS, FWACS, FICS

Eze (Dr) Godwin Ugbam, popularly known in his early years as Goddy, was born on February 26, 1939 to Joseph Ariamah and Achirinma Ugbam.

He attended primary school at St Phillips Anglican School, Eha-Amufu and got his secondary education at Iheme Memorial Grammar School, Arondizuogu. He then proceeded to study Medicine at the prestigious University of Ibadan, graduating with flying colours.

He graduated at the beginning of the Nigeria/Biafra Civil War and worked at the Biafra Army Medical Corp where he served in the Field Ambulance Unit during the Civil war working as well as training personnel in the evaluation of casualties from the war.

In 1972, he moved to the United Kingdom where he trained as a Surgeon, working across several hospitals including Whittington Hospital, Edgware General Hospital, Hackney Hospital and Brainsgrove Hospital. He completed his training with the award of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, England. He then travelled to the United States where he worked at the Children`s Hospital Pittsburgh and completed his subspecialty training in Paediatric Surgery. Due to his burning desire to give back to his home country, he made the decision to move back to Nigeria where he attained his Fellowship with the West African College of Surgeons.

He worked as a Paediatric Surgeon at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu and was a Senior Lecturer with the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus.

Due to his commitment and devotion to service, "Goddy" was regularly appointed to serve in various capacities within the University/Hospital where he was working and these included Coordinator of Paediatric Surgical Programme, Member - Senate Examinations Committee, Admissions Committee and Hospital Management Board, UNTH Enugu. He was also Ag Director of Clinical Services and Training, UNTH Enugu as well as Member, Board of Governors, University of Nigeria Secondary School, Enugu Campus.

In view of the excellent managerial traits he exhibited in his primary place of work - UNTH Enugu, he was appointed initially by Abia State Government as the Pioneer Chief Medical Director of Abia State University Teaching Hospital in May 1994 and then later by the Federal Government as the Chief Medical Director of Federal Medical Center, Umuahia in July 1999 where he made significant strides in the development of the hospital previously known as Queen Elizabeth Hospital Umuahia. He was also one of the pioneer heads of the proposed Medical School of the Federal University, Umudike.

He was involved in several research publications in renowned surgical journals and served as Executive Vice President, Cancer Society of Nigeria from 1981 to 1986. He trained and supervised many Surgical Residents with his professorial acumen to become consultants and was a Senior Examiner with the Post Graduate Surgical College.

He loved to take care of his patients, to teach and mentor medical students and residents. He also enjoyed nature and would often spend his leisure time in his several farms where he planted a wide range of crop varieties and tended his animals.

His love for humanity and tradition saw him later appointed as the traditional ruler of his own town - Umuasua and other neighbouring towns where he was fondly called Eze Omeroha.

His effortless sense of humour and the "chortle and ring" of his laughter lives on in our minds. His generosity and philanthropism remain a testimony to many who knew him. He was indeed a unique and charismatic individual.

He is fondly remembered by his wife, children and grandchildren.

We are devastated by this loss and he will be sorely missed by everyone!
