Abia Lawmakers Rally Behind Governor Otti, Dismiss NLC's Fund Seizure Claims as Baseless

The Abia Lawmakers have expressed firm support for Governor Alex Otti, challenging the opposition and NLC's unfounded claims of a bill to seize LGA funds. Lawmakers dismissed these allegations as misinformation and urged voters to participate in credible local elections.

The Abia State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Governor Alex Otti, challenging opposition-led allegations of a proposed bill to seize 90% of Local Government Area (LGA) allocations. Members of the Assembly denounced the claims by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as baseless, urging them to provide evidence or cease from fueling political misinformation.

After a closed-door meeting on October 28 with Governor Otti at his country home in Umuehim Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, Speaker Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa addressed the media, clarifying that no bill of this nature exists. Emeruwa reiterated that the Assembly, comprising members across all political parties, remains united and supportive of the Governor's policies.

"We stand firmly behind Governor Otti and challenge the NLC to substantiate their claims. There is no such bill in consideration, and it is within the Assembly's mandate to legislate on LGA matters transparently," Emeruwa stated. He underscored that the Assembly's focus remains on supporting credible, fair local elections scheduled for November 2, a priority aimed at enhancing grassroots governance.

The Assembly Speaker also criticized opposition attempts to portray the legislature as fractured, highlighting that members are working collaboratively with the Governor on initiatives benefiting the state.

Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Mmerigini, serving as the Assembly spokesperson, echoed this solidarity. He emphasized that the primary purpose of their meeting with the Governor was to reaffirm their support and assure him of their continued commitment to his administration's progress.

Hon. Obianyi Lewis, representing Ukwa East, used the opportunity to call on his constituents to actively participate in the elections and not be swayed by rumors of a predetermined outcome. "The Assembly stands united, and we trust the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) to conduct transparent elections. Our commitment to democratic values is unwavering," Lewis stated.
