ABIA PANEL: How Police Brutalized Lawyer Who Went For Bail | READ DETAILS

The Abia State Panel of Inquiry, today March 31, received a petition from a lawyer, Uchenna David, Esq. claiming police restriction and Brutality in a bid to carry out his constitutional job.

Recalling his experience in 2016 before the panel, the counsel alleged that one Mr Audu Shindali also known as Dembere, attached with the State Intelligence Bureau, SIB, head quarters Umuahia, with his colleagues assulted he and his learned colleague, one Armstrong Ibekwe.

" I went as a lawyer to secure the bail of a client, one Ihuoma Uzoma. On that day, because of the attitude of the police officer Audu, who demanded for an illegal sum of N100,000, bail wasn't granted.

" When I inquired why the amount, he became angry and bittered, demanding to know why we would come to his office to waste his time.

" In an attempt to persuade him further to listen to our plea and grant my client bail, Audi punched my colleague Armstrong on his cheek and blood started gushing out.

" As I tried to inquire why he acted that way, Audu slapped me so hard that it attracted other people. He was asking who am I to question him in his office even as I was fully dressed as a lawyer".

The counsel further informed the panel that he went to the office of the head, SIB department, Mr Sunday Adeyemi, who commanded officer Audu and his colleagues to match them out.

" While they were matching us out with gun, we resisted and went up to the Commissioner of Police' office who saw the injury and assigned an officer in his office to accompany us to the office of the IPO" the counsel added.

According to Barrister David, the Commissioner of Police set up a panel of findings on the matter .

" At each sitting, they give excuses which will make the matter to be adjourned. They delayed it for a year and six months so we pulled out the matter for baiase and negligence of duty" he said.

The case was adjourned till April 6, for defense.
