The Abia State Government has announced a 100 percent increase in enrollment into public schools across the state, marking a major milestone in Governor Alex C. Otti's ongoing education reform agenda.

The revelation came from the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, during the weekly post-Executive Council briefing held at Government House, Umuahia, on Thursday.

According to Prince Kanu, the impressive rise in school enrollment reflects the growing confidence of Abians in the public education system, following a series of bold reforms introduced by the Otti-led administration since assuming office.

He attributed the growth to several targeted initiatives, including the recent recruitment of qualified teachers, the introduction of free education at the primary and junior secondary levels, and the regular payment of teachers' salaries - a sharp contrast to the situation under previous administrations.

"What we are witnessing is the result of Governor Otti's deliberate investment in human capital. Abians now believe in the quality of education being offered in our public schools," Prince Kanu stated.

The Commissioner highlighted other landmark education policies such as financial incentives for teachers posted to rural areas, extension of the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years, and the regular training and retraining of educators to meet modern standards.

He also noted that the government is ensuring strict monitoring of teacher deployment, especially in rural communities, to address complaints of absenteeism and boost productivity.

Prince Kanu added that significant improvements have been made in school infrastructure, including renovation of classrooms, provision of modern teaching aids, and the adoption of updated curricular to align with national and international educational standards.
