An inspiring boot camp in Abia is changing lives for children with Cerebral Palsy. Discover how experts and advocates are shaping a more inclusive future.
Umuahia, Abia State - The air was filled with hope, courage, and an unshakable sense of unity as The Straight Child Foundation, in partnership with the Abia State Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection and the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons, hosted its Annual Boot Camp for Children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) on Tuesday, 12th August 2025.
This year's theme, "Strength in Unity: Collaborative Care for Children with Cerebral PalsyÔÇØ, brought together medical professionals, parents, caregivers, advocates, and government officials in a remarkable show of solidarity for children living with CP.

From expert lectures to heartfelt testimonies, the event proved to be more than just a conference - it was a movement for change.

Dr. Chidemere Rose Ann Ifenyinwa, consultant paediatrician and child neurologist at FMC Umuahia, emphasized that early detection and intervention are key to giving children with CP the best possible outcomes.

"CP is not the end of a child's potential. With proper care, therapy, and love, they can thrive and achieve great things,ÔÇØ she said.

Also speaking, Dr. Peace Amaraebgulam - consultant orthopedic surgeon at FMC Umuahia and founder of The Straight Child Foundation - described the boot camp as a fight against stigma and a call for inclusion.

"This is not the job of health workers alone. Every member of society has a role to play in making life better for these children,ÔÇØ she urged.

A Mother's Journey: From Tears to Triumph
One of the most moving moments came when a mother, whose son lives with cerebral palsy, shared her personal journey. Without any formal training in special needs care, she relied on patience, understanding, and tolerance to raise her child.
Her son, who could not attend nursery school until the age of 10, has now completed secondary school.
"Though he cannot write, he can read perfectly and operate his phone with ease,ÔÇØ she said with a proud smile.

She credited her strength to God's guidance, constant encouragement from other CP mothers, and lessons learned at special children's gatherings. At these events, her son interacted with other kids with similar conditions, learning how to stand, balance, and carry out tasks independently.

Her story drew emotional applause from participants and became a living testimony that disability is never inability when love and support are present.

A Call for Inclusion

The boot camp ended with stakeholders pledging to keep pushing for a society where no child is left behind, and where inclusion is not just a word, but a way of life in Abia State.

It was a day where science met compassion, where policy met personal stories, and where hope for a brighter, more inclusive future was renewed.
