The Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) has announced November 2, 2024, as the official date for local government elections. This marks a crucial moment for grassroots governance in the state, as political parties gear up to field candidates. ABSIEC has released a full timetable outlining key dates for the election process.

The Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) has officially set Saturday, November 2, 2024, as the date for the much-anticipated local government elections across the state. This move is a significant step in reinforcing grassroots governance in Abia, as residents prepare to elect their leaders at the local level.

The announcement was made in line with the powers conferred on ABSIEC under the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as the commission looks to ensure a smooth and transparent electoral process. According to the commission, chaired by Professor George Chima, the upcoming election will give political parties the opportunity to field candidates across Abia's local government areas.
The election timetable, as outlined by ABSIEC, begins with the Notice of Election on Saturday, September 21, 2024. Political parties are expected to begin their primaries on Tuesday, September 24, with the primaries concluding by Wednesday, October 2.

Following the primaries, political parties are to submit their candidates between Friday, October 4, and Sunday, October 6. The screening of candidates by ABSIEC will take place from Monday, October 7, to Wednesday, October 9.

The screening committee will handle appeals and complaints from Thursday, October 10, to Friday, October 11. If substitutions are needed, the screening of substituted candidates will occur between Sunday, October 13, and Monday, October 14.

The final list of candidates will be published from Tuesday, October 15, to Wednesday, October 16, allowing campaigns to officially begin on Thursday, October 17, and run until Thursday, October 31.
The local government election will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, while run-off elections, if required, will follow on Sunday, November 3.
