ABUJA EARTH TREMORS: Fear Grips Residents, As Dele Alake Reveals The Cause

Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals, has reassured residents not to panic over the recent Abuja earth tremors in Mpape and Katampe. The minister went further the reveal the cause of the tremors and what the federal government is doing about it.

As concerns rise following a series of Abuja earth tremors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, has urged residents to remain calm, explaining that the tremors are due to accumulated stress along natural fault lines.

Speaking in response to fears expressed by residents in Mpape and Katampe communities, Alake reassured the public that the tremors, which began on Saturday, September 13, have been closely monitored by the federal government. According to him, these Abuja earth tremors are low in intensity and pose no significant threat to lives or property.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Minister explained that the tremors were caused by "accumulated stress along identified faults,ÔÇØ resulting in several ground motions recorded by the government's monitoring station at Katampe. These movements have varied in intensity but remain weak to light, Alake stated.
"The Abuja earth tremors observed in Mpape and Katampe are a natural result of accumulated stress along fault lines,ÔÇØ Alake said. "There's no need to panic, as these movements are of low intensity, and we are monitoring the situation closely.ÔÇØ

With fears of potential earthquakes growing among residents, Alake emphasized that the federal government has systems in place to alert citizens to any major seismic events. He added that the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) is conducting real-time monitoring to ensure public safety.
He further reassured the public that the government is committed to providing timely updates on any new developments and stressed that the recent tremors are no cause for alarm. "Our NGSA Seismic Stations are operational and will alert us to any significant events in real-time,ÔÇØ he added.
