Tears of joy flowed freely as Ogbonna Igbojionu, a man wrongly imprisoned at the age of 22, reunited with his now aged mother after 26 years of being on death row at Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in Lagos.

Now 48 years old, Ogbonna Igbojionu's release was made possible through the direct intervention of the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti (OFR), who facilitated his freedom as part of ongoing justice reforms and humanitarian efforts being championed by the state.
Ogbonna was just 22 years old when he was arrested in connection with a generator-related incident - a case riddled with inconsistencies and no credible evidence. He was later sentenced to death and dumped at Kirikiri, where he languished for 26 long years, forgotten by a system that failed to protect the innocent.

But through the Legal Support and Justice Reform Initiative of the Otti administration, his case was reviewed and escalated, leading to his eventual release - a moment that has reignited calls for sweeping prison reform and review of wrongful convictions in Nigeria.
A government source familiar with the case described Ogbonna's release as a testament to Governor Otti's commitment to justice, compassion, and human dignity.
