Alex Otti: We Celebrate Achievers, Not Political Loyalists in Abia State

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has sent a strong message to citizens of the state, urging them to actively contribute to Abia's development if they wish to be celebrated and remembered.

Governor Otti made this statement on Saturday, October 25, 2025, during the grand 95th and 85th birthday celebration of elder statesman, Dr. Uma Eleazu, and his wife, Elder Mrs. Njansi Eleazu, hosted by the Abia State Government at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia.

The governor emphasized that under his administration, recognition and honour are based on impact, not political affiliation, stressing that those who work for the progress of Abia and Nigeria will always be celebrated by his government.

"We are challenging everyone to put something on the table - contribute to Abia State and Nigeria at large. It doesn't matter your political party, we will celebrate you.

Our state is political party blind. We pay attention to your contribution, not your noise," Otti declared, adding that, "It is the empty barrel that makes the most noise."

Governor Otti noted that celebrating distinguished Abians who have made remarkable contributions to society has become a culture under his leadership, explaining that his administration deliberately recognizes individuals whose works reflect service, intellect, and integrity.

He disclosed plans to celebrate other notable elder statesmen such as Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe (Rtd.) and General Ike Nwachukwu (Rtd.), both of whom recently turned 85, before the end of the year.

The governor described Dr. Uma Eleazu as a rare intellectual and visionary elder, commending him for his lifelong dedication to knowledge and public service. He particularly praised the celebrant for his recently published book titled "Nigeria Democracy Under Siege: Rebuilding the Ramparts of Democracy", which was launched at the event.

"If a 95-year-old man can sit down to write a book that will guide future generations, then nobody has an excuse not to leave a legacy," Governor Otti charged.

The event drew a large gathering of dignitaries including the Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Chief Theo Nkeire, Chief Etigwe Uwa (SAN), and several national and state lawmakers.

Also present were former Deputy Governor Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Dr. Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah, Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu, among others.

In his remarks, the celebrant, Elder Dr. Uma Eleazu, expressed deep appreciation to Governor Otti for honouring him and his wife, commending the administration for what he described as "a government that has restored hope and happiness to Abia people."

"The happiness index of Abia State has moved from minus zero to about 80% in just two years," Dr. Eleazu stated, adding that "there will be no vacancy in Government House until Otti completes his eight years."

Dr. Eleazu, a respected scholar and public policy expert, said Governor Otti's leadership has redefined governance in Abia by focusing on people, accountability, and sustainable development.

The event also featured the launch and review of Dr. Eleazu's new book, "Nigeria Democracy Under Siege", reviewed by Chief Ireke Kalu Onuma, and the cutting of the birthday cake, officiated by Most Rev. Prof. Miracle Aja of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria.

Governor Otti concluded by reaffirming his administration's commitment to honouring merit and excellence, noting that Abia is witnessing a new era of governance that rewards genuine contributions rather than political loyalty.
