In what is being described as one of the most ambitious healthcare infrastructure projects in Africa, the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, is set to officially flag off the construction of the Abia Medical City on July 10, 2025.

The multi-billion-dollar initiative, which is strategically positioned to reverse the rising trend of medical tourism among Nigerians and West Africans, was unveiled during this week's State Executive Council meeting presided over by the Governor at Government House, Umuahia.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Okey Kanu, described the upcoming Medical City as a "signature project" that will not only transform Abia's healthcare landscape but will position the state as a leading destination for cutting-edge medical services in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

"The Abia Medical City is not just a hospital project-it is a transformational medical and economic infrastructure designed to redefine the future of healthcare delivery, eliminate outbound medical tourism, and attract both local and international patients,ÔÇØ Prince Kanu said.

Set to be constructed on a 200-hectare expanse of land, the Abia Medical City will feature:
A 1,000-bed capacity ultra-modern hospital equipped with advanced diagnostic, surgical, and treatment technologies.

Facilities for medical tourism, including specialized care units for cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, and transplant medicine.

The project is valued at a staggering $1.3 billion, making it one of the largest single healthcare investments in Nigeria's history. According to the Commissioner, the Abia Medical City will be delivered under a Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) model through a strategic partnership with MKP International Holdings, a globally recognized infrastructure investment firm.

"The Abia State Government is not borrowing for this project. What we are bringing to the table are our land, strategic location, logistics, and the global credibility of Governor Otti's administration,ÔÇØ Prince Kanu explained.
