Anambra Governor Soludo Declares War on Noise Pollution, Bans Public Preaching |WATCH VIDEO

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has issued a firm directive banning street preaching in markets, motor parks, and public spaces across the state, citing noise pollution and violations of public order. The governor, during an unscheduled visit to a market in the state, confronted a street preacher who was using loudspeakers to broadcast his message, disrupting traders and shoppers.

The issue of preachers turning markets and motor parks into makeshift crusade grounds has been a long-standing occurrence in Anambra, causing disruptions and infringing on public peace. Addressing the situation, Soludo stated that while freedom of worship is guaranteed, it should not be exercised in a way that inconveniences others.

"If you want to preach the word of God, you go to your church. You can't come to the marketplace and begin to disturb everybody else. It's noise pollution," Soludo declared.

The governor, who was visibly displeased, noted that under Anambra State environmental laws, noise pollution is a punishable offense. He added that if not for his decision to exercise restraint, the preacher would have been arrested on the spot. Instead, he issued a strong warning, advising the preacher never to repeat such an act and urging him to confine his evangelism to his church premises.

Beyond banning public preaching, Soludo also addressed the traders, educating them on the adverse effects of noise pollution. He warned that fixing loudspeakers outside their shops and blaring music or advertisements at excessive volumes is equally an environmental nuisance and a violation of state laws. The governor emphasized that such practices would no longer be tolerated, adding that enforcement measures would be put in place to curb the trend.

For years, traders, commuters, and residents of Anambra have complained about excessive noise pollution caused by street preachers, traders, and commercial transport operators who blast music and advertisements through powerful sound systems. Despite previous warnings, the practice has continued unchecked. With Soludo's latest directive, it appears the state government is finally taking decisive action.
