"Having consulted with my family, friends and political associates, it has become apparent that the bond of confidence holding us together as members of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) is no more there," Obinna Ekekwe stated.

"It shows infirmity of character to adhere to issues that are unacceptable to my person, as I cannot sell the cow and still sup the milk. I therefore, hereby voluntarily resign my membership of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), even when there is no certain place to go to. I have to move on."
The politician, however, appreciated the PDP for the opportunities it offered him over the years, noting that he was grateful for the journey so far.
Political analysts in the state have linked Obinna Ekekwe 's resignation to the ripple effect of the earlier exit of former Abia Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu, who also dumped the PDP amid deepening internal wrangling. Oko Chukwu's resignation sent shockwaves through Abia North, with insiders suggesting that more high-profile exits could follow as the party continues to lose grip on its strongholds.
Ekekwe's departure has once again raised concerns about the future of PDP in Abia State, especially as the 2027 general elections draw closer. His next political move remains uncertain, but his exit is being widely interpreted as another major setback for a party that once dominated Abia politics.
