Arne Slot reveals 'simple reason' why Alexander Isak was 'perfect' summer signing for Liverpool, and why Florian Wirtz is 'so special'
Liverpool have showed signs of returning to form with back-to-back victories over Aston Villa and Real Madrid in the last week. Head coach Arne Slot spoke with TNT Sports' Owen Hargreaves about new signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, and explained why Hugo Ekitike will be a "big success". Liverpool face Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
Arne Slot has explained the "simple reason" why Alexander Isak was the "perfect" signing for Liverpool in the summer.
Isak signed for Liverpool from Newcastle on Deadline Day in a British-record £125m transfer following a summer-long saga, during which time the Sweden international refused to play for Eddie Howe's side.
Isak was the second-highest scorer in the Premier League last season and netted 27 goals in 42 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions during the 2024/25 campaign.

He has not replicated that form so far at Liverpool, scoring just once in eight appearances and is currently sidelined due to injury.
However, asked by TNT Sports' Owen Hargreaves on The Breakdown whether Isak was the "perfect player" for Liverpool to sign in the summer, Slot was in agreement.
"Yeah, for the simple reason that we scored the most goals and this season again we are one of the teams, together with Man City, that creates the most chances from open play," said the Liverpool head coach.
"And the first thing you think about is if we can bring in a No. 9 who can finish these attacks that would be ideal."

Along with Isak, Liverpool's other marquee signing in their huge summer spending spree was Florian Wirtz.
Playmaker Wirtz signed for £116m but is yet to show the qualities that saw him shine so brightly in Bayer Leverkusen's title-winning success under Xabi Alonso.

Wirtz was even dropped from the starting line-up as Liverpool went on a run of six defeats from seven matches.
"If you can give him spaces, which has happened this season, maybe not as much as in the Bundesliga, then he is so special," said Slot about Wirtz.
"And we have to make sure to get him in these spaces as much as we can. He has been there, he has created, he has maybe been unlucky with the end result.
"He is also experiencing a change of playing style, he was used to the 3-4-3 system, so different factors come into it."
Ekitike will be 'great success'
Liverpool have shown signs of returning to form over the last week with back-to-back wins over Aston Villa and Real Madrid.

Hugo Ekitike led the line for Liverpool in both games in the absence of Isak, having joined from Eintracht Frankfurt earlier in the summer.
Ekitike has netted six goals for the Reds and Slot has backed him to be a "big success" at the club.
"If you are that tall and your footwork is as good as his, that is what makes him special," Slot said. "His footwork is great, his finishing is great, so we have brought in two very good No. 9s, as we have brought in so many good players.
"The depth of the Premier League is so strong that a game every three days is something he [Ekitike] needs to adjust to, but he is so talented and will be a big success at Liverpool."

Comparing Ekitike to Isak, Slot added: "They have similar qualities but also different qualities.
"Hugo could also play off the left in my opinion, or around Alex, whereas Alex is more of an out-and-out No. 9. Hugo is maybe more a player that likes to drop more in spaces whereas Alex prefers to be in the middle."
Some of Liverpool's struggles this season have been attributed to the signing of so many players in the summer window.
But Slot suggests that injury issues have been a greater issue for his team.
"I fully believe in the policy and strategy of this club to not have a very big squad," he said.
"We have 19 or 20 players, but if you have that then keeping them fit is crucial if you have so many games, and that has been more difficult for us than last season. When I came last season, every player in the team already experienced a minimum of one Premier League season and this season a lot of them come for the first time."
Liverpool will be looking to make it three wins in a row when they face Manchester City on Sunday in the Premier League.
Liverpool are a point behind City and seven behind leaders Arsenal.
