Assembly Passes Akwa Ibom Official Symbols Bill Into Law

A Bill for a Law to Establish the Akwa Ibom State Official Symbols and other matters connected therewith, has been passed into law by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

Recall that the Bill had at Plenary on Thursday, September 17, 2020, scaled through its First and Second Readings and was committed to the Committee on Information for scrutiny.

Presenting the report at Plenary on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, Chairman of the Committee, Rt. Hon. Aniefiok Dennis, noted that the general principle of the Bill is sufficiently indicative that the Bill when passed into law, will entrench pride, hope and dignity in the state and also foster unity among the people.

"The Bill when passed into law will bring out our history and values which will result in the general consciousness of our heritage. It will further unite us and give us clear distinction from other states", he said.

He revealed that the Committee received inputs from various stakeholders, through a memoranda submitted to it before, on and after the Public Hearing which held on Monday, September 21, 2020.

Subsequently, the House after considering the report at the Committee of the Whole, passed the Bill into Law, with September 22, 2020 as its commencement date.

In his remarks, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey thanked Members of the House for their cooperation which aided the passage of the Bill.

He directed the Clerk, Mrs Mandu Umoren to communicate the decision of the House to the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

At Plenary also, A Bill for a Law to Establish the Akwa Ibom State Road Traffic Authority and for other Matters Connected therewith sponsored by the Member representing Ukanafun State Constituency, Hon. Dr. Charity Ido, scaled through Second Reading and was referred to the House Committee on Works and Transport for scrutiny.

Similarly, the House received a Motion on Development of Tourist Sites in Ikot Abasi into Tourist Centres from the Member representing Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Uduak Odudoh.

In the meantime, the House has adjourned Plenary to Tuesday September 29, 2020 at 10am.
