Assembly proposes bill to establish Abia State Number Plate Authority

The Abia State House of Assembly in its plenary on Tuesday considered an H.A.B 15 of the House for the establishment of the Abia State Number Plate Production Authority.

The bill which was sponsored by Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, the Member representing Isialangwa North State Constituency, explained if the establishment of an Authority to produce Number Plates is made, there is no doubt that it will generate revenue for Abia State.

The lawmaker further said that sometimes when our people buy their cars and go to register them, it lingers on for one week thereabout because of unavailability of the Number Plates, adding that it will also help to create direct and indirect employments.

Concluding while leading the debate on the Bill, Hon. Onwusibe said it is not an exclusive right of the federal government to legislate on this matter.

After contributions from lawmakers, Speaker of House Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, said the Bill is a simple one that seeks to partner with the Federal Road Safety Commission to see to the production and availability of number plates in Abia.

He noted that it is easier to get other States' number plates than that of Abia State, pointing out that such is why over 70% of Abians have their private cars registered with either Abuja or Lagos instead of having Abia on the Number Plates.

The Bill was thereafter committed to the Joint Committee on Finance and Transportation for further input.

The House adjourned plenary to Wednesday 29th of January, 2020.
