President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has come under intense fire over his declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, a decision that has been described as reckless, unconstitutional, and a ticking time bomb for Nigeria's fragile democracy and economy.

Senator Babafemi Ojudu, CON, has strongly criticized the move, questioning who advised the President to take such a drastic action that could destabilize both Rivers State and the entire nation.

In a press statement, Sen. Ojudu expressed shock and disbelief over the President's decision, labeling it a disastrous political blunder that could lead to a national crisis.

"I have just picked up my phone after breaking my fast to find multiple missed calls and countless messages about an alarming development: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly declared a state of emergency in Rivers State.

"If this is true, then I must ask: Who advised the President to take this course of action? Whoever it is, they are certainly not a friend of his administration, nor do they have the best interests of Nigeria at heart."

Ojudu warned that Tinubu is walking into a political minefield by choosing to escalate a mere political dispute into a constitutional crisis.

Beyond the political consequences, Sen. Ojudu warned of dire economic implications that could plunge Nigeria into another recession if the crisis spirals out of control.

He recalled how the Niger Delta crisis previously pushed Nigeria into a recession under former President Muhammadu Buhari, leading to a drastic drop in oil production from 2.5 million barrels per day to below 400,000 barrels per day.

"This decision threatens to undo all the progress made over the years," Ojudu stated. "If the situation escalates, we risk renewed pipeline sabotage, illegal oil bunkering, and militant activities. We risk another economic nosedive-at a time when Nigeria can least afford it."

He further warned that foreign investors will not wait for Nigeria to resolve its internal conflicts. Instead, they will take their capital elsewhere, leading to an economic meltdown.

Sen. Ojudu questioned the misplaced priorities of the Tinubu administration, arguing that Nigeria is already grappling with multiple security and economic crises that demand urgent attention.

"While we waste energy escalating political battles in Rivers State, thousands of Nigerian soldiers are still fighting for their lives-and for the nation's survival-against insurgents, bandits, and kidnappers in the North East, North West, and North Central.

"These are the real emergencies. These are the crises that demand decisive leadership. Instead of wasting resources on an avoidable political crisis, the President should be focusing on strengthening national security."

Ojudu did not mince words in calling out what he believes is an abuse of executive power.

"A state of emergency is not a strategy-it is an admission of failure," he said. "There are far more effective, far less destructive ways to handle this situation."

He urged President Tinubu to rethink his decision immediately to prevent further chaos.
