The Federal Government has revealed major decisions reached between Nigeria and the United States following a series of high-level security meetings held in Washington, D.C., over rising concerns about attacks in parts of the country and allegations of targeted violence against Christians.

The Nigerian delegation, led by National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, held strategic engagements with senior officials of the US Congress, the White House Office of Faith-Based Initiatives, the US State Department, the National Security Council, and the Department of Defense.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's media aide, Bayo Onanuga, who disclosed the outcome of the meetings, said both countries agreed to deepen intelligence and defence cooperation to address Nigeria's persistent security challenges.
According to Onanuga, the meetings were crucial in strengthening Nigeria's ties with the US, creating what he described as "new avenues of collaboration to protect citizens across all regions of the country.ÔÇØ

During the engagements, the Nigerian team strongly disputed claims circulating internationally that Christians in Nigeria are victims of a systematic genocide.
The delegation reportedly told US officials that violent attacks affect multiple communities across religious and ethnic lines, warning that mischaracterising the crisis could worsen tensions and distort ground realities.

They maintained that the situation requires united action rather than narratives capable of dividing citizens.
Following days of meetings, the United States government expressed readiness to expand its security support to Nigeria. Key areas include:

Enhanced intelligence-sharing to track and dismantle extremist networks.
Faster approval processes for Nigeria's defence equipment requests.
Potential release of surplus US defence hardware, subject to availability.

Technical assistance to strengthen early-warning systems that detect threats before they escalate.

Both nations also agreed to immediately implement a non-binding cooperation framework and establish a Joint Working Group to coordinate ongoing and future security strategies.
