Ekeoma Fires Back at APC Chairman, Says Abia Has Moved On From Mediocrity

The political atmosphere in Abia State may be gradually heating up following a strongly worded statement by Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Special Adviser to Governor Alex Chioma Otti on Media and Publicity, in which he responded to recent criticisms from the Abia State chapter of the APC.

In a statement titled "Separating Dishonesty and Ignorance from Abia APC's Comedy,ÔÇØ Ekeoma took a swipe at the Abia APC Chairman, Chijioke Chukwu, accusing him of making misleading claims and lacking proper understanding of governance issues, particularly in the areas of salaries, federal allocations, and civil service wage structure.

Ekeoma stated that the recent comments attributed to the APC leadership in the state were not only inaccurate but also failed to acknowledge the financial realities inherited by the present administration and the reforms currently ongoing in the state.

According to him, discussions about federal allocation must be balanced with the realities of salary arrears, pension arrears, recruitment of new workers, and implementation of the new minimum wage, which he said have significantly increased government expenditure.

He argued that comparing allocations without considering inherited debts and obligations presents a misleading picture to the public.

The media aide further explained that the present administration has been addressing years of unpaid salaries and pensions inherited from previous administrations, while also expanding the workforce through recruitment of teachers and health workers.

He noted that the government also implemented the new minimum wage and other salary adjustments, which he said increased the monthly wage bill significantly.

He added that the government is also processing the payment of gratuity arrears dating back many years, describing the financial commitment as enormous but necessary to correct past injustices.

Part of the controversy also centered on the concept of consequential adjustment, which refers to salary adjustments across different salary levels after an increase in minimum wage to maintain salary relativity.

Ekeoma explained that the policy is a standard government practice and not a new policy introduced by the current administration, adding that negotiations are usually carried out between government and labour unions before implementation.

Political observers say the debate over consequential adjustment has now become one of the major talking points in Abia's political discussions.
