Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has finally returned to Nigeria after serving nearly two years in a United Kingdom prison, marking a dramatic end to one of the most controversial legal battles involving a Nigerian political family in recent history.

Mrs. Ekweremadu arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Tuesday, January 21, where she was quietly received by friends, relatives, and close associates, following her release from custody in the UK.

Her return closes a painful chapter that began in 2022 when she and her husband were arrested and charged under the United Kingdom's Modern Slavery Act 2015 for their alleged involvement in an organ trafficking conspiracy.

Beatrice Ekweremadu was convicted alongside her husband for facilitating the travel of a 21-year-old street trader from Nigeria to the UK, allegedly for the purpose of harvesting his kidney for their daughter, Sonia, who is battling chronic kidney disease.

While Senator Ike Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months as the principal actor, Beatrice received a four-year and six-month jail term. A third defendant, Obinna Obeta, described as the medical "middleman,ÔÇØ was handed a 10-year prison sentence.

The case attracted global attention, triggered diplomatic concerns, and dominated Nigerian and international headlines for months, marking the first conviction under the UK's modern slavery law involving organ trafficking.

According to UK law, inmates convicted of non-violent offences are typically eligible for release on license after serving half of their sentence. This provision paved the way for Beatrice Ekweremadu's release and eventual return to Nigeria.

Her husband, however, remains behind bars in the UK, continuing his long prison term.

Despite the return of Mrs. Ekweremadu, the family's ordeal is far from over. Their daughter, Sonia Ekweremadu, who was cleared of all criminal charges during the 2023 trial, continues to undergo medical treatment for her kidney condition.
