The Eleme Local Government Area (LGA) secretariat in Rivers State has been set ablaze, just hours after the unsealing of local government secretariats across the state by the police. This comes amid the ongoing political conflict between Governor Sim Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike, which has left Rivers State on edge.

The arson was discovered when the newly elected chairman of Eleme LGA, Brian Gokpa, arrived at the secretariat accompanied by councillors and supporters. To their shock, a section of the complex had been set on fire, leaving parts of the building in ruins. The incident was confirmed through a phone conversation with former Ambassador Oji Ngofa, a notable figure from Eleme.

This shocking act of destruction is being viewed by many as a direct result of the unsealing of Rivers LGAs, which were previously closed off by police forces for months amid a heated political battle between Governor Fubara and Wike. The LGAs had been sealed to prevent interference and possible political maneuvering by either faction, with both camps struggling for control over the state's local administration.

The unsealing of the LGAs was part of an order from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who instructed the immediate withdrawal of police personnel from the 23 LGA secretariats.
