FG Issues Urgent Appeal as Nigerians in Lebanon Resist Evacuation Amid Israel-Hezbollah Conflict

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed growing concern over the reluctance of many Nigerians residing in Lebanon to return home despite the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. As tensions heighten in the region, the government is urging Nigerians in Lebanon to cooperate with evacuation efforts to ensure their safety.

In a statement issued by Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was revealed that out of over 2,000 Nigerians living in Lebanon, only about 500 have registered for evacuation. Despite persistent persuasion from the Nigerian Embassy in Beirut, the majority remain hesitant to leave.

"Even though most of them have not indicated a willingness to return home in spite of the persuasion by our embassy, we will continue to do everything to ensure the safety of our citizens," Abu-Obe stated, emphasizing the importance of cooperation.

The Nigerian government has activated emergency protocols, prioritizing the safety of its citizens in Lebanon. These efforts are being coordinated with various national agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is committed to ensuring a smooth and safe evacuation process.

The Nigerian Embassy in Beirut has been actively advising citizens to stay indoors, follow the directives of local authorities, and register with the embassy for immediate evacuation. Despite the ongoing conflict, no Nigerian lives have been lost so far, according to the Ministry.

Arrangements are underway to deploy a C-130 aircraft or other available flights to facilitate the evacuation of Nigerians from Beirut. Many have already relocated from southern Lebanon, which remains the epicenter of the conflict between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters.

The Nigerian government also expressed its gratitude to the international community for their understanding and support during this crisis. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reassured the public that it is closely monitoring the situation and will take all necessary steps to safeguard its citizens.

As the conflict shows no signs of abating, the government continues to urge Nigerians in Lebanon to prioritize their safety and cooperate with evacuation procedures.
