Former NUT National President, I.U Nwokocha Passes On

The family of former National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ezeji Chief I. U. Nwokocha has formally announced his passing on which took place on the 25th of February 2021 after a brief illness at age 88.

The late Chief Nwokocha served the Nigeria Union of Teachers in various capacities for nearly three decades, holding the chairmanship of the Imo State Wing of the Union from 1985 to 1988, and the office of National President from 1988 to 1991. He also served as Secretary, Organizations Committee, Abia State Movement - the body that drafted the Abia Charter of Equity. And in recognition of his role as one of the founding fathers of the state, he was, in 2017, conferred with the exclusive Merit Award of ENYI ABIA by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu. He held the chieftaincy titles of Ikemba 1 of Osokwa Nvosi and Ezumezu 1 of Aba, among numerous others.

Chief Nwokocha is survived by his wife, Ezinne Apollonia Nwokocha, seven sons and two daughters, as well as grandchildren. He was a devout Christian, a lover of humanity and a great promoter of community development.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
