Governor Alex Otti Approves Recruitment of 2,500 Teachers in Abia State | READ DETAILS

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has approved the recruitment of 2,500 teachers to boost education quality. The initiative includes STEM-focused policies, free education enforcement, and innovative programs like Mathematics Clinics for exam students.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the recruitment of 2,500 teachers for primary and secondary schools across the state. This initiative is part of the state government's commitment to improving the quality of education and addressing the shortage of teaching staff in public schools.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing at the Government House in Umuahia following this week's State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Otti.

Revitalizing Education in Abia State

The recruitment drive aims to fill existing vacancies in both basic and post-basic education systems. According to Prince Kanu, this development underscores the importance Governor Otti places on education as a key driver of societal progress.

Additionally, the state has launched a compulsory free education policy and introduced the "Out of School Children Policy" to ensure every child of school age receives education. Education Marshalls have been appointed to work with a harmonized taskforce to enforce this policy.

The Information Commissioner explained that any child found outside school during school hours would be taken to the nearest school after engaging with their parents or guardians to understand the reasons for their absence.

STEM Initiative and Mathematics Clinics

To strengthen its focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, the Abia State Government has introduced Mathematics Clinics for students in JSS 3 and SS 3. These sessions will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. and aim to boost students' confidence in Mathematics and other science subjects.

Elder Goodluck Ubochi, Commissioner for Basic Education, emphasized the importance of STEM education, noting that Mathematics is foundational for the sciences. He added that students preparing for external examinations will benefit from extended school hours, with specialized lessons in subjects like Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and English.

Online Recruitment Platform

The Commissioner for Basic Education also revealed that the teacher recruitment process will be conducted online to ensure transparency. Details of the application process will be made public in the coming days.

The briefing was attended by key government officials, including the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche; Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Prof. Joel Ogbonna; Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma; and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Chief Ukoha Njoku Ukoha.
