Governor Otti Awards 150M to Top Graduates, Rolls Out Bold Education Reforms in Abia State

Governor Alex Otti has pledged to revolutionize Abia State's education sector, announcing a 20% budget allocation and extensive support for institutions. At the Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic convocation, he awarded 150M in grants to 150 top graduates, reaffirming his administration's commitment to excellence.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reiterated his administration's unwavering commitment to revamping the education sector in the state. Speaking at the 19th-21st combined convocation ceremony of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, the governor unveiled a series of transformative initiatives aimed at positioning Abia's educational institutions as centers of excellence and innovation.

Governor Otti revealed that the education sector has once again been prioritized in the 2025 state budget, with a 20% allocation matching the previous year. This decision underscores his administration's resolve to address the long-standing challenges in the sector.

"Our investments in education are targeted at producing employment creators, not just job seekers. From retrofitting schools to training over 2,000 teachers, our efforts are designed to create a solid foundation for academic excellence and economic empowerment," the governor stated.

As part of the event, the governor announced 1 million business grants for 150 exceptional graduates from the polytechnic. The grants aim to encourage entrepreneurship and support innovative business ideas among young Abians. Prospective beneficiaries are required to submit detailed business proposals to oggh@abiastate.gov.ng by December 31, 2024.

- A newly reconstructed main entrance gate.

The governor further pledged to upgrade the internal campus road network and ensure a conducive learning environment.

The Rector of the polytechnic, Dr. Christopher Okoro, shared remarkable milestones achieved within months of his appointment. These include the introduction of cutting-edge courses like Artificial Intelligence and efforts to accredit 16 new programs.

The Governing Council Chairman, Mr. Stanley Egege, assured stakeholders that the council remains committed to transforming the institution into a hub of technological and entrepreneurial excellence.

The combined convocation celebrated the achievements of 6,621 graduates, with 3,138 receiving National Diplomas and 3,483 earning Higher National Diplomas.

The convocation attracted notable figures, including Hon. Ginger Onwusibe (representing Isialangwa North and South Federal Constituency), members of the State House of Assembly, state commissioners, and other dignitaries.
