Contrary to earlier reports circulating on social media and some traditional media outlets, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has clarified that no helicopter crash occurred in Kaduna on July 1, 2024. Instead, a NAF Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) experienced a mishap shortly after take-off on a mission. The incident took place near Rumji Village, approximately 15 kilometers from the base.

As it was an unmanned vehicle, there were no casualties on board or on the ground. The NAF has already commenced a preliminary investigation to determine the cause of the mishap. Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, Director of Public Relations and Information, assured Nigerians that this minor setback would not affect ongoing operations.

Gabkwet also emphasized the importance of accurate reporting, criticizing the rush to publish unverified news. He pointed out that several media outlets mistakenly reported a helicopter crash without confirming the facts with NAF, thereby misleading the public. This incident highlights the need for responsible journalism, particularly in matters concerning national security and military operations.

"While the news of the crash filtered in, some outlets had misinformed Nigerians that a helicopter had crashed without the decency to clarify from the NAF. This attitude should be discouraged as it negates the principle of developmental journalism, balanced reporting, and fairness," stated Gabkwet.
