How Angry Voters Locked Up INEC Staff In Anambra

Angry voters in Anambra locked up some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday.

The incident happened at College Primary School, Oko Ward II in Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.

According to a PTCIJ observer, trouble started when electoral officials wanted to head to LGA collation center from the ward.

A presiding officer, who confirmed the attack, said aggrieved voters demanded that the collation be done at the ward but the officials said they had been asked to take the materials to the local government office of INEC for collation because it was getting dark.

She said the voters descended on them and insisted that they would not leave.

To prevent the officials from leaving, the voters locked the gate, thereby creating tension at the centre even as police officers posted to the polling unit scampered for safety.

It took the intervention of soldiers who came from the LG headquarters to rescue them and bring the sensitive materials safely to the INEC LGA office.
