In a move aimed at protecting customers and restoring confidence in the banking sector, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued new operational guidelines compelling all commercial banks to provide instant refunds for failed ATM, POS, and online transactions.

According to the new CBN directive, banks are now mandated to automatically reverse failed transactions within minutes once a customer's account is debited without corresponding value being received. This is part of the apex bank's ongoing efforts to strengthen consumer protection and ensure transparency in electronic payment operations.

The policy marks a significant shift from the previous 24-72 hours refund window that often left customers stranded and frustrated. With the new rule, banks will face sanctions if they delay refunds or fail to comply with real-time reconciliation systems.

CBN emphasized that the move became necessary following increased complaints from Nigerians about failed transactions at ATMs, POS terminals, and online banking platforms, particularly during peak service hours and weekends.

The guidelines also direct banks to upgrade their infrastructure to support instant dispute resolution and notification systems, while ensuring that customers are informed immediately after a failed transaction is reversed.
