Two suspected cultists have been arrested for allegedly shooting dead, a soldier in Bayelsa state.

The soldier, Abbas Fatai was attached to the Operation Delta Safe Headquarters at Igbogene, in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital.

Fatai, who was a Corporal and was with the 16 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, was reportedly shot few meters away from the Operation Delta Safe Headquarters.

It was gathered that the gunmen opened fire on him and zoomed off in a waiting car on Thursday night, July 22.

According to a community source, the deceased soldier seemed to be familiar with his assailants as he was on phone call with them before he was shot down.

"They called him on phone and when he got close to them, they opened fire on him. And they zoomed off. The way it happened seems they have known one another. But we cannot explain what happened.ÔÇØ

Speaking to journalists, the acting Chairman, Bayelsa Volunteers, Lucky Asanakpo, said that the organisation, in collaboration with stakeholders, arrested the two suspects while the other, escaped.

"Our surveillance unit got wind of the killing of the soldier and immediately swung into action by spreading its tentacles around.

"We caught two suspects, but a third suspect identified as Confidence and some others are at large. Concerted efforts are being made by the security agencies to apprehend the fleeing suspects.ÔÇØ

The suspects who were arrested on Friday, July 23 were; MacNelly Vincent, 27, and Gilizibe Taldord, aka Agator, 26.

Vincent, an indigene of Igbogene has been accused of being a member of Bobos confraternity while Talford, an indigene of Igbogene Community, allegedly belong to Greenlanders confraternity.

They have been handed over to the military formation in Igbogene area.
