How Nigerian Police Uncovered Cybercrime Network, Arrested 130 Suspects Including Chinese Nationals in Abuja

In a sweeping crackdown on cybercrime, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested 130 individuals, including 87 Chinese nationals, 26 Malaysians, and 17 Nigerians, in Abuja's Jahi area for alleged high-level cybercrime activities. The suspects, reportedly involved in hacking and activities that pose national security threats, were apprehended in a coordinated operation by law enforcement.

The Nigeria Police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrests on Sunday, highlighting the scope of the operation which uncovered a cybercrime network operating in the heart of the capital. He stated that the raid, led by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) for Zone 7, AIG Benneth Igweh, involved personnel from the Nigeria Police Force Zone 7 Command Abuja, alongside the National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC).

According to Adejobi, the operation targeted a building near the Next Cash and Carry area in Jahi, where the suspects were reportedly using sophisticated computer devices to conduct illicit activities. The raid, he explained, was carefully planned and executed to dismantle what authorities believe is a complex network of cybercriminals exploiting advanced technology for hacking and other cyber-related crimes.

"We are scientifically analyzing the evidence recovered from the suspects and are committed to ensuring a thorough investigation," Adejobi stated. "These individuals will be charged to court upon the conclusion of our investigations, where they will face justice."

The arrests, involving a diverse group of individuals, underscore Nigeria's growing focus on tackling cybercrime and its commitment to ensuring that the country's cyberspace remains secure. The operation serves as a critical step in safeguarding both public and private sectors from cyber threats.
