Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has commissioned a 150kVA solar power system with a 430kWh battery storage facility for the Abia State Specialist and Diagnostic Center, Umuahia-marking a significant stride in his government's commitment to renewable energy and sustainable healthcare infrastructure.

The solar power installation, fully designed to power critical health facilities independent of unreliable grid electricity, is part of a broader energy transition strategy to ensure uninterrupted medical services for Abians. The installation will not only slash the cost of diesel and generators but will also guarantee 24/7 power supply for lab operations, diagnostic tools, and patient care at the center.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Otti emphasized the importance of reliable energy in health delivery, noting that powering critical services like diagnostics and laboratories with solar energy is a step towards transforming Abia's health sector.

"This 150kVA solar power project and 430kWh battery storage is not just an energy solution; it is a lifesaver," Otti stated. "We want to ensure that our diagnostic centers never go dark again. This project marks the beginning of many more solar-powered interventions across the state."

Immediately after the commissioning, Governor Otti launched the Abia Integrated Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Accelerated Programme (AIWAP) at Okigwe Park, Umuahia. The AIWAP initiative, according to the Governor, will be replicated in ten strategic locations across Abia, with Okigwe Park as the pilot site.

"This is a great project because you cannot talk about sanitation or forbid open defecation if you don't provide people with dignified and clean alternatives," Governor Otti said while unveiling the Okigwe Park facility.

The integrated WASH centre at Okigwe Park features gender-separated toilets (three each for male and female), washrooms, and solar-powered water supply accessible to the surrounding community. The design also includes a water-fetching point to serve the general public, making it a practical solution to water scarcity and poor sanitation in public spaces.

According to the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, each facility is fully powered by solar energy and strategically sited to maximize public benefit. He revealed that the drilling rig procured last year is now actively being used to expand access to clean water in rural communities through new borehole projects.

"The uniqueness of this project is in its full solar integration and public accessibility. We're redefining the WASH sector in Abia with a model that can be scaled sustainably," the Commissioner said.

The twin events were witnessed by senior government officials, members of the public, and other stakeholders, who commended the Governor's forward-thinking approach to infrastructure delivery.

These projects underscore the Otti administration's focus on health, hygiene, and sustainable energy, aligning with his broader development agenda to modernize Abia through innovation and community-focused policies.
