The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the tragic loss of 20 lives and the rescue of 11 individuals following a devastating boat mishap on River Benue in Agatu Local Government Area (LGA). The incident, which has plunged the community into mourning, occurred on Saturday night when a wooden canoe carrying traders capsized midway through its journey.

According to reports, the victims were returning home from the Ocholonya market in Agatu LGA to Odenyi in Nasarawa State. The journey, which began around 8 pm, ended in tragedy as the overloaded canoe collided with a submerged tree, causing it to overturn. Witnesses revealed that despite warnings about the dangers of overloading and traveling at night, passengers insisted on making the journey, eager to return home.

Superintendent Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer for Benue State, confirmed that 20 bodies had been recovered from the river. She stated that rescue operations are still underway, with 11 survivors already pulled to safety.

The tragic accident has once again highlighted the risks associated with unsafe water transportation practices. Local authorities and community leaders have called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent future occurrences.
