I QUIT - Lewandowski announces shock decision after being stripped of captaincy
Lewandowski has sensationally walked away from the Polish national team after refusing to play under current manager Michał Probierz.
What should have been a routine international camp for Poland has turned into one of the most controversial weeks in the nation's football history.
After a decade of leading his country through highs and heartbreaks, Robert Lewandowski has made a career-defining decision, leaving fans stunned.
Lewandowski walks away from Poland setup after captaincy snub
On Monday, the Barcelona star who is Poland's all-time top scorer, dramatically announced his decision to step away from the national team "as long as" current head coach Michał Probierz remains in charge - just days after being stripped of the captaincy.

"Considering the circumstances and the loss of trust in the Polish national team coach, I have decided to step back from playing for the Polish national team as long as he remains the coach. I hope I will have the chance to play again for the best fans in the world."
The Polish Football Association confirmed that coach Probierz had opted to replace Lewandowski with midfielder Piotr Zieliński as the new captain.

"The coach personally informed Robert Lewandowski, the entire team and the training staff of his decision," the PZPN said in an official release as per Daily Mail.
Dressing room mutiny and waning influence
While the announcement shocked fans across Europe, reports from Polish media suggest this may have been a long time coming.

According to Onet Sport, Lewandowski's influence in the dressing room had been quietly eroding.

One report noted that several teammates had "already had enough of his swagger" and claimed that if the captaincy had been put to a vote, the striker wouldn't have retained it.

The tension appeared to boil over in March, when Lewandowski, benched during a 2-0 win over Malta, allegedly stormed into the dressing room post-match and openly criticised players and staff.
He also took his frustrations public, complaining about the lack of youth in the national setup:

"Look, we have matches with Lithuania and Malta, and there should be five 18, 19, 20-year-olds at the training camp," he told reporters. "And apart from Kacper Urbanski, there probably weren't any. This also shows that we have what we have. We have to focus on this material, develop it and get the most out of it."

His presence drew a sharp rebuke from Polish icon Zbigniew Boniek, who accused him of playing image games:
"If you are the captain of the team, you are responsible for it. It is not just about taking the team out and putting on the armband," Boniek said.

While the Barca star has cited both physical and mental exhaustion as the reason for stepping away - particularly after a demanding season with the Catalan giants - critics argue that the captaincy snub and rising internal friction were the final straw.
Lewandowski's Poland legacy
Lewandowski's international record is simply unmatched.
The iconic Pole has scored an incredible 85 goals in 158 caps, having worn the armband since 2014.

But under Probierz, Poland became the first team eliminated from Euro 2024, and the coach's choices have been widely scrutinised.

Probierz, who replaced Fernando Santos in late 2023, now finds himself under intense pressure, not just over performances, but for alienating the country's most iconic player.
