Inside Otti's Plan to Transform Aba Through the Aba Commercial Smart City Project

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has once again drawn a firm line between vision and mere promises, declaring that the proposed Aba Commercial Smart City Project will only be flagged off after investors demonstrate full financial readiness and commence physical work on site.

Governor Otti made this position clear on Thursday, February 5, 2026, when he received a high-powered delegation of promoters and partners of the Aba Commercial Smart City Project at his office.

According to the Governor, his administration will not be associated with ceremonial project launches that collapse shortly after publicity. He insisted that actual mobilisation to site must precede any official flag-off, stressing that this approach has become a defining principle of his government.

"I want to see the colour of the money. Work must start first. Contractors should mobilise to site and work for weeks or months before any flag-off,ÔÇØ the Governor stated.

Governor Otti warned against a scenario where projects are launched with fanfare only to be abandoned after a few days or weeks, noting that such practices erode public trust and stall development. While expressing eagerness to see the Aba Commercial Smart City take off immediately, he assured the promoters that the state was willing to grant additional time to ensure total preparedness.

The Aba Commercial Smart City Project is envisioned as a transformative investment hub designed to reposition Aba as a leading centre for commerce, manufacturing, logistics, and innovation in Nigeria and beyond. The project aligns squarely with Governor Otti's broader economic reform agenda, which prioritises sustainable investments, job creation, and long-term value over political symbolism.

The Governor reiterated that Aba remains central to Abia's economic rebirth, stressing that only credible, well-funded projects would be allowed to define the city's future.

In a related development, Governor Otti disclosed that his administration would soon flag off the construction of Enyimba Hotel, set to become Aba's first-ever five-star hotel, being developed in partnership with Radisson Blu, one of the world's most respected hospitality brands.

He revealed that Radisson Blu has already commenced work at the site of the long-abandoned Enyimba Hotel project at Ogbor Hill, Aba, originally initiated decades ago during the administration of Late Dr. Sam Mbakwe, former Governor of old Imo State.

The revival of the Enyimba Hotel project, according to the Governor, further demonstrates growing investor confidence in Abia State following reforms in infrastructure, security, power supply, and governance transparency.

The Governor was joined at the meeting by key members of the Abia State Executive Council, including the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Ikechukwu Uwana (SAN); Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Dr. Mrs. Salome Obiukwu; and the Director-General/CEO of Public-Private Partnership and Investment Promotion, Mr. Chinedum Chijioke, alongside other senior government officials.

Their presence underscored the administration's coordinated approach to attracting credible investments and enforcing strict accountability standards.

Observers say Governor Otti's insistence on "work before flag-offÔÇØ signals a fundamental shift in Abia's development culture-one that prioritises substance over spectacle and delivery over declarations.

As preparations continue, all eyes remain on the Aba Commercial Smart City Project, widely regarded as a potential catalyst for industrial growth, massive employment, and urban renewal in Aba and across Abia State.
