Int'l Women's Day: Akpabio Vows To Promote The Rights Of Women

The Nigerian Senate led by the Senate President, Senator Godwill Akpabio has joined women to commemorate the international Women's Day.

The Mace was lowered to enable the senators to exit the chamber during plenary to cut the cake .

The President of the Senate , Godswill Akpabio said although women representation in the Senate is low , but it will continue to do all in its powers to promote the rights of women and girls in the country.

"'On behalf of the Senate President and the esteemed members of the Senate, we extend our heartfelt appreciation, acknowledging the unwavering support and invaluable contributions made by Nigerian women to our great nation, NigeriaÔÇØ he said.

Note that March 8 has been set aside to mark international women's day which commenced in 2010. This was as a result of the March 8, 1908, women workers protest through New York City's Lower East Side to register displeasure over child labor and sweatshop working conditions, and demand women's suffrage.

However in 1910, Clara Zetkin proposed International Women's Day at the International Women's Conference in Copenhagen. The idea was unanimously approved, leading to the first observance in 1911 in several European countries, with over a million participants advocating for women's rights. Therefore, beginning in 1910, March 8 became annually observed as International Women's Day.

This year international women's day happened to be the first of it kind, the leadership of the Nigerian upper legislative chamber is celebrating boldly womanhood, which goes to show the important the Godswill Akpabio led national assembly attach to our mothers and sisters.

Currently among the 109 lawmakers at the Senate , the upper legislative chambers just has 4 female legislators.

The female Senators among the 109 Senators: Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan, Senator Idiat Adebule, Senator Ipalibo Harry Banigo Senator Ireti Kingibe, but despite their numbers, Akpabio led Senate found it worthy to join the five female lawmakers in the red chamber to celebrate the entire women across the globe.

The Senate has also assure that it will make efforts to ensure fair consideration legislations supporting women's Rights in Nigeria.
