... Mayor Chinedu Ekeke flags off a bold 50-hectare cassava project, positioning Isuikwuato as the garri hub of the South East.

The Mayor of Isuikwuato Local Government Area, Mr. Chinedu Ekeke, has officially launched what is being described as the biggest and most audacious agricultural project ever embarked upon by any LGA in Abia State - a 50-hectare cassava production cluster spread across all 10 wards of the local government.

The groundbreaking project, already in progress, is designed to transform Isuikwuato into a major cassava and garri production hub for the South East and beyond, boosting food security, job creation, and local economic growth.

According to Mr. Ekeke, the initiative is not just about farming but about empowering communities, opening farm access roads, and establishing a sustainable agribusiness model that will benefit both current and future generations.

"This 50-hectare cassava cluster is a vision-driven project that covers every ward in Isuikwuato. Each ward is providing five hectares, and together we are laying the foundation for an agricultural revolution that will make Isuikwuato a household name in food production,ÔÇØ the Mayor said.

Already, bulldozers and tractors are clearing lands, while farm access roads are being opened to ensure connectivity to the farms. In Ahaba Imenyi Ward 1, the entire five hectares are located in Obiohia Ihenzu, Ahaba. In Ezere Ward 2, the five hectares are split between Amaorji Ovim (3 hectares) and Umuakwua (2 hectares).

The Mayor's Media and Communications aide, Chimaobi Ben Okorie, disclosed that the project is part of a larger vision to make Isuikwuato the garri capital of the South East, ensuring farmers not only cultivate cassava but also benefit from value-chain opportunities.

Observers say the scale of this initiative makes it the largest agricultural cluster in Abia's LGA history, and it comes at a time when food inflation is hitting households across Nigeria.

The economic benefits are expected to be far-reaching, from creating jobs for youths and farmers, to providing raw materials for agro-industries, and ensuring food affordability in the region.
