Kidney Day: Abia NMA Chairman Reveals Plan To Tackle Quackery

As the World Health Organization, WHO, marks Kidney day today, March 11, the Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association, Abia State Chapter, Dr Chimezie Okwuonu, stressed on the importance of kidney health.

This was in a press release, at the Secretariat complex of the NMA, on Wednesday, March 10.

This year's theme is tagged: LIVING WELL WITH KIDNEY DISEASE.

Speaking on the essence of world kidney day, Dr Okwuonu said the day is used to create awareness of preventive measures to kidney disease, carrying out screening programme, and engage the public on issues concerning kidney health.

He lauded the Kidney transplant team of the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, for successfully carrying out 10 kidney transplants.

He added that the kidney centre is the first of it's kind in the southeast and remains the only centre with regular transplant activity in the Southeast and South-South Nigeria.

Dr Okwuonu stressed that the advanced form of kidney failure is rampaging the country, as the causes which include; hypertension, diabetes, HIV infection, and herbal concoctions, are inherent.

He regretted that kidney failure has enveloped the younger age.

The medical expert pointed out that most people die from kidney disease for financial constraints.

He disclosed the plans of Abia State NMA, to commence a legislative process of passing an anti-quackery bill which he said, if approved, will make the state unsafe for quacks and also promote good medical practice .

He charged the federal government to equip the medical facilities and also, subsidize at least, two session of dialysis per week, to enable patients of kidney disease to live well.
