Sule Lamido, ex-governor of Jigawa State and former national secretary of the SDP, has issued explosive claims that President Bola Tinubu initially backed General Ibrahim Babangida's annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, before later reshaping his image as a pro-democracy activist. He made these charges during an Arise TV interview on Saturday, sparking debate over Tinubu's historical positioning.

Sule reminded viewers that Tinubu was not among those who resisted Babangida's actions in 1993. At the time, Tinubu was a senator with the SDP, while Lamido led the party nationally. "With all respect... he was part of those people who supported Babangida's annulment of June 12,ÔÇØ Lamido claimed. He even alleged Tinubu's late mother orchestrated pro-annulment support with Lagos market women

Sule contended that Tinubu only rose to prominence after General Sani Abacha seized power in November 1993. He accused Tinubu of staging his NADECO activism for political gain, describing it as "dramatising his own role in Nigerian democracy.ÔÇØ
"He was a major supporter of Babangida... it was when Abacha took over that he became the soÔÇæcalled activist of June 12,ÔÇØ Lamido stated in the interview.

Lamido's perspective gains weight from his insider role during that era. As SDP's national secretary, he confronted Babangida directly, demanding resignation over the annulment. He also pushed back against the formation of the Interim National Government led by Shonekan, which critics saw as Babangida's ploy to retain influence .
