Massive Hiring: Abia Govt Shortlists 9,371 Teachers, Increases Recruitment to 5,000

The Abia State Government has shortlisted 9,371 candidates for its teachers' recruitment CBT, with Governor Alex Otti approving an increase in hiring from 2,500 to 5,000. The Abia State Government (ABSG) has announced the shortlisting of 9,371 applicants for its ongoing teachers' recruitment exercise. The selected candidates will soon undergo a Computer-Based Test (CBT), with the date to be communicated shortly.

Disclosing this development during a press briefing at Government House, Umuahia, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, revealed that the application portal was officially closed on February 12, 2025, after receiving a total of 29,797 applications.

"Out of this number, 9,371 applications were shortlisted, and these candidates will sit for a CBT before proceeding to the next stage of the recruitment process," Kanu stated. "Successful candidates from the CBT will be invited for an oral interview, after which the final selections will be made. The entire process is designed to be transparent, merit-based, and free of political interference."

In a major boost for the state's education sector, Governor Alex Otti has approved the expansion of the recruitment quota from 2,500 to 5,000 teachers.

Speaking on the expansion, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, noted that the increase was necessitated by the growing influx of students into Abia's public schools, following the introduction of free and compulsory education.

"Initially, the government approved the recruitment of 2,500 teachers," Ubochi explained. "However, after reviewing the rising student enrollment due to free education, Governor Otti graciously approved an increase in recruitment to 5,000 to bridge the teacher-student ratio gap and improve the quality of education."

Meanwhile, in a bold move to reposition Abia's education sector, Governor Alex Otti is set to launch a groundbreaking initiative tagged 'ABIAFIRST' on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. Themed "Re-imagining Education in Abia: Unleashing the Potential of Every Abia Youth," the program aims to revolutionize education in the state by ensuring access to world-class learning opportunities for all students.

Prince Kanu described ABIAFIRST as a visionary initiative designed to enhance learning outcomes, integrate technology into education, and modernize school curricula in line with global best practices.

In a bid to preserve the cultural heritage of the Igbo people, the Abia State Government has made the study of Igbo language compulsory in all schools from primary level up to Senior Secondary Two (SS2). According to Prince Kanu, this policy is aimed at reviving and strengthening Igbo identity among younger generations.

"The Igbo language is a vital part of our heritage, and its compulsory reintroduction into schools is expected to drive a cultural renaissance," Kanu stated. "We are determined to ensure that our children are well-versed in their mother tongue, reinforcing their sense of identity and belonging."

Furthermore, the government has reintroduced History as a core subject in Abia schools, stressing its significance in nation-building and cultural preservation.

"Any society that seeks progress must understand its past. Abia has a rich historical background, and it is our responsibility to educate future generations about their roots," Kanu emphasized.

Commissioner Ubochi further clarified that the new history curriculum will be redesigned to incorporate unique Igbo historical narratives that distinguish the region from others.

"Previously, most history lessons overlapped with Civic Education. With a new curriculum set to be introduced next academic year, we will ensure that Abia students learn the key historical facts that define the Igbo people," he stated.

Meanwhile, the Abia State Government has warned individuals and groups spreading falsehoods to desist or face the full weight of the law.

Prince Kanu cautioned against the misuse of social media and other platforms to spread misinformation, emphasizing that the government is committed to transparency and has nothing to hide.

"We will no longer tolerate deliberate attempts to mislead the public. Anyone found guilty of fabricating false narratives will be held accountable under the Cybersecurity and Data Protection Act," Kanu warned.

The press briefing was attended by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Evaluation, Mazi Ugochukwu Okoroafor; Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma; and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Citizen Ukoha Njoku Ukoha.
