Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has sounded a resounding alarm on what he described as a "silent emergencyÔÇØ threatening Nigeria's future-malnutrition, poverty, and food insecurity. He made this known while delivering a powerful address at the launch of the Federal Government's N-774 Nutrition Initiative in Umuahia on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

Otti described the worsening state of hunger in Nigeria as "a ticking time bomb,ÔÇØ warning that unless urgent structural changes are made, Nigeria's children and vulnerable populations will continue to suffer irreversible physical and cognitive damage.

"We are too blessed as a nation to be this hungry. This is not just about feeding; this is about saving the next generation,ÔÇØ he declared to an audience of top government officials, health stakeholders, and representatives from all 17 local governments of Abia.

The N-774 Initiative, a federal government nutrition project targeting all 774 LGAs in the country, was flagged off in Abia-a move Otti said he was honored by, but also challenged to ensure results beyond bureaucracy.

He commended the commitment of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Health, Dr. Uju Anwuka, whose energy and focus he described as "a clear example of the impact youth and women can have in governance when given the chance.ÔÇØ

A National Crisis of Hunger and Insecurity

Governor Otti did not hold back in identifying Nigeria's failure to harness its vast arable land, insecurity in farming regions, dysfunctional logistics systems, and poor policy enforcement as the real culprits of the food and nutrition crisis.

"If we don't tackle the agricultural value chain, insecurity, and lack of investment in rural farmers, the N-774 initiative will be a fine document with no bite,ÔÇØ Otti stated.

He queried why Nigeria still lacks basic food price stabilization policies and warned against "official decrees that are ignored right after they're made.ÔÇØ

Hunger, Poverty, Malnutrition: A Deadly Triangle

Otti emphasized that fighting malnutrition cannot be done in isolation. "There is a direct link between malnutrition and poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and social uncertainty,ÔÇØ he warned.

He pledged his administration's full backing, stating that Abia will mobilize resources and community leaders to drive the project across all LGAs. "We've committed 35% of our budget to education and health since 2024. This is not lip service-it's our most important investment.ÔÇØ
