Night Service Turns Chaotic in Ondo as Six Worshippers Taken - One Safely Recovered

An early morning worship service in Ondo State was disrupted when six congregants were reportedly taken from a Celestial Church along the Owo-Akure Expressway in Uso, Owo Local Government Area.

Community sources said unidentified individuals entered the church premises around 12:50 a.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, causing panic among members before leaving with several worshippers.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said security agencies responded swiftly after receiving distress information.

In a statement, Jimoh disclosed that operatives of the command, working alongside the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups, immediately mobilised to the area and commenced coordinated search and rescue efforts.

"As a result of sustained joint operations, one of the victims has been successfully recovered,ÔÇØ the statement noted.

Police further confirmed that one suspected informant connected to the incident has been taken into custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations.

Security presence has since been reinforced in the area, with authorities assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe return of the remaining worshippers.

The incident adds to rising security concerns across parts of the country, particularly along major highways and rural communities where worship centres and schools have increasingly become soft targets.

Residents of Uso and surrounding communities have called for enhanced patrols and intelligence-driven policing to prevent similar occurrences.

Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities urged members of the public to remain calm and provide credible information that could aid ongoing operations.
