NLC's False Claims on LGA Funds Spark Controversy: Abia State Government Fires Back

In a strong rebuke, the Abia State Government has condemned the Abia chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) for allegedly spreading misinformation regarding a bill currently before the Abia State House of Assembly. The government, through Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Ferdinand Ekeoma, refuted claims by the NLC that a bill had been introduced seeking to cede 90% of Local Government funds to the state, leaving only 10% for the LGAs. Ekeoma emphasized that no such proposal exists and urged the public to disregard the NLC's accusations, which he described as "reckless and misleading.ÔÇØ

In a letter dated October 26, 2024, Ekeoma explained that the bill in question aims to establish the Abia State Rural Access Road Agency, which is part of the World Bank's Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP). He clarified that the bill involves both state and local governments contributing counterpart funding for road construction and development without any reduction of LGA autonomy or seizure of funds. According to Ekeoma, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Meregini, had already dismissed these claims as unfounded, clarifying that the bill is aligned with federal guidelines and upholds LGA financial autonomy.

"The NLC should have sought clarification instead of rushing to the media with unsubstantiated claims. A reputable organization ought to engage in thorough investigation, rather than spreading misinformation,ÔÇØ Ekeoma stated. He further challenged the NLC to produce any documentation proving its allegations.

The press release expressed concern over the NLC's approach, questioning why the organization would resort to public accusations without verification. The government argued that NLC's recent actions had diverted attention from the core mission of promoting the welfare of its members, choosing instead to engage in what it described as "media clout chasingÔÇØ that distracts from real issues.

The administration urged Abia workers to call their NLC leadership to order, cautioning that such actions only serve to create unnecessary tension and division within the state. "Governor Alex Otti's administration is committed to dismantling the old destructive order and paving the way for productive, people-focused development across Abia,ÔÇØ Ekeoma emphasized. He advised the public to disregard misleading narratives and assured Abians that the government remains steadfast in its commitment to development.
