Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has spoken out on the escalating political crisis in Rivers State, warning that the power tussle is undermining democracy and worsening the plight of ordinary citizens.
Obi, in a strongly worded statement shared on his social media page on Tuesday, expressed deep concern over the situation, stating that the ongoing conflict is yet another example of how political leaders are failing to use democracy to serve the people.

"It is unfortunate that 60 years after independence and nearly 30 years of unbroken civil rule, our democracy is still plagued by undemocratic practices,ÔÇØ Obi stated.

He lamented that Nigeria's elections are often manipulated to serve the interests of a privileged few rather than the will of the people, leading to governance that does not prioritize the welfare of citizens.

Highlighting the impact of the crisis in Rivers State, Obi stressed that the real victims are the suffering masses, whose concerns about education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation continue to be ignored.

"The ongoing crisis in Rivers is not about improving the lives of the people or addressing key development challenges. Instead, it is driven by reasons that do not benefit the common man,ÔÇØ he said.

Obi further urged the warring factions to reconsider their actions and remember that leadership is a divine responsibility that must be used to uplift the people, not plunge them into deeper suffering.
