Abia State pensioners received a major boost of hope as Governor Alex Otti announced that the long-awaited decision on the payment of their gratuities has finally been reached, ending months of uncertainty.

Speaking during the November edition of "Governor Alex Otti Speaks To AbiansÔÇØ - his monthly media interaction held on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the Banquet Hall of Government House Umuahia - the Governor disclosed that the issue, which has lingered since 2001, is now set for implementation following the conclusion and submission of a comprehensive report by the National Executive of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) alongside its Abia leadership.

Governor Otti revealed that the accumulated unpaid gratuity for retirees in Abia stands at over 60 billion, a burden inherited from past administrations. He noted that the figure is enormous and requires strategic financial planning.

Despite the weight of the debt, Governor Otti declared that his administration is committed to finally breaking the cycle of neglect that pensioners endured for years. He assured that payments will commence gradually.

Otti emphasized that the process may take time due to the huge financial implications, but stressed that the days of uncertainty for pensioners are over.
