Umuahia, Abia State - In a bold step towards transforming Umuahia into a modern urban center, Governor Alex Otti has flagged off the construction of two major road projects: the 4.32-kilometer Orpet-Umuafai-Lodu-Ahiaeke Road and the 3.79-kilometer Ahiaeke-Okwuta-Bende Road. Speaking at the Craneburg Site Office along Lodu-Ahiaeke Road on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration's commitment to infrastructural renewal, economic revitalization, and urban expansion.

Governor Otti emphasized that the road projects were part of a broader vision to reposition Umuahia as a model city. According to him, his administration is correcting the misconception that Umuahia has always been a mere civil service town, recalling its historical significance as an industrial and economic hub. He referenced the investments made by past leaders, such as the Golden Guinea Breweries and Modern Ceramics Industrial Complex, as evidence of the city's potential.

"Umuahia has always been a land of big dreams, and our responsibility is to ensure those dreams do not die. We are investing in world-class infrastructure to create an environment where businesses and residents can thrive," Otti stated.

The governor highlighted that the new roads would do more than just improve transportation; they would enhance economic activities, reduce travel time, and create opportunities for residents and businesses along these corridors. He noted that when completed, the roads would benefit key stakeholder groups, including transporters, commuters, traders, students, artisans, and property developers.

"Infrastructure development is at the heart of our economic agenda. By opening up these roads, we are facilitating business expansion, reducing the cost of transportation, and improving property value in these areas," he said.

The Honourable Commissioner for Works, Engr. Don Otumchere Oti, assured residents that the projects would be executed to the highest standards, with a focus on durability and environmental sustainability. He urged affected communities to cooperate with contractors to ensure smooth execution.

Governor Otti further explained that the road construction is part of a comprehensive urban renewal strategy, which includes the expansion of the Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard into a six-lane highway, the transformation of Library Avenue through Akanu Ibiam Road, and other major infrastructural projects.

"We are not just building roads; we are creating an ecosystem where businesses can flourish, technology can thrive, and residents can enjoy a higher quality of life," he remarked.

The governor also announced the upcoming launch of the Abia State Urban Mass Transit Initiative, which will introduce clean energy-powered vehicles to streamline public transportation in Umuahia and Aba. He described it as a game-changer that would ease movement, cut commuting costs, and improve safety.

Governor Otti reiterated his administration's commitment to transparency and prudent financial management.
