Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the upgrade of Umunneato General Hospital to a Specialist Hospital to enhance healthcare services for residents of Abia North Senatorial Zone.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing at Government House, Umuahia, following the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting presided over by Governor Otti.

Umunneato Specialist Hospital: A Major Healthcare Boost

Prince Kanu stated that the newly upgraded Abia State Specialist Hospital, Umunneato, will undergo a full-scale reconstruction and retrofitting to meet specialist medical standards. With this development, Abia now boasts three state-owned Specialist Hospitals, each strategically positioned across the three senatorial zones:

"This move aligns with the government's strategic infrastructural development agenda to ensure that every part of the state benefits from the administration's transformational strides,ÔÇØ Kanu stated.

According to him, the aim is to decentralize healthcare services, ensuring residents no longer have to travel long distances for quality medical care.

'Project Ekwueme' Hits 55% Completion

Giving updates on the ongoing rehabilitation of 200 Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) under 'Project Ekwueme,' Prince Kanu confirmed that the project has reached 55% completion, with about 10 PHCs fully ready for commissioning.

Furthermore, he highlighted the World Bank Impact PHC Project, which has commenced across 67 additional health centers in the state.

While distinguishing between the state-led 'Project Ekwueme' and the World Bank's Impact PHC Initiative, Kanu clarified that 948 PHCs exist across Abia, with the first phase of 200 under 'Project Ekwueme' nearing completion. The second phase will commence immediately after the first is fully delivered.

Otti Partners PETAN on Oil & Gas Investment

In a groundbreaking economic move, the Abia State Government, in collaboration with the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN), has floated a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) called ABTAN ENERGY LTD to explore and invest in the state's vast Oil and Gas resources.

According to Prince Kanu, this initiative follows an earlier agreement between the state government and PETAN to tap into Abia's enormous oil reserves, which include over 100 capped oil wells.

"This strategic partnership consolidates our business relationship with PETAN and grants the state unhindered access to the oil industry, unlocking massive economic opportunities,ÔÇØ Kanu affirmed.

Abia Commences Survey of Solid Mineral Deposits

In addition to oil and gas investments, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has begun a statewide field study to determine the commercial viability of solid mineral deposits.

Abia is estimated to have 17 different mineral resources, and the study will guide potential investors and industries on setting up operations where the minerals exist in commercial quantities.

Govt Warns Misinformation Peddlers: 'We Will Enforce Cybersecurity Laws'

Taking a firm stance against fake news and deliberate misinformation, Prince Kanu issued a stern warning to opposition elements and social media propagandists, emphasizing that the state government will take legal action against falsehood peddlers under the Cybersecurity Act and Data Protection Act.

"We will not tolerate malicious attempts to mislead the public. The government has nothing to hide, and we will not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law against purveyors of falsehood,ÔÇØ he warned.
