Prison Break: Villagers Burn Escaped Prisoner Who Returned Home

An inmate who escaped from the Owerri Correctional Centre which was attacked on Monday has been burnt by angry residents of Umuawom village, Ihodimeze community in Ikeduru council area of Imo State.

According to the Nation, the unidentified prisoner, was said to have hailed from the nearby Ogwa community in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State but grew up in Umuawom village, which is his maternal home.

It was gathered that the prisoner was involved in kidnapping of one of the families in community but was eventually apprehended and remanded in custody for over one year.

The criminal having escaped from the prison when to the house of one of the family member who testified against him threatening to deal with them.

It was reported that the inmates attacked a member of the family with a gun in Umuawom village.

Source that spoke with The Nation noted that the action of the escaped prisoner prompted villagers to pounce on him and immediately set him ablaze.

Spokesman for the Police Command, Orlando Ikeokwu, said he had heard about the incident but could not officially confirm it.

In another development, a student of Federal College of Forestry Mechanization, Afaka, Kaduna State, who was released by bandits on Monday has revealed how they regained their freedom.

Recall that the Nigerian Army had earlier stated that its troops rescued five of the students from their abductors after three weeks in captivity.
