Reasons Why Court Dismissed Nnamdi Kanu's Bail Request

A federal High court judge in Abuja has dismissed a fresh request by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB), for bail and a change in custody.

Justice Binta Nyako rejected the request on Monday, 20th May 2024, citing previous rulings against Kanu on the same issues.

Kanu, currently held by the Department of State Services (DSS), had sought bail reinstatement after a prior bail was revoked due to his absence from court proceedings. He also requested transfer from DSS custody to house arrest or prison.

Justice Nyako stated that Kanu previously jumped bail and fled the country, and his sureties were discharged due to their inability to locate him. She asserted that Kanu's only legal recourse is an appeal to a higher court.

The judge also disagreed with Kanu's lawyer's claim that the Supreme Court had mandated the reinstatement of his earlier bail. Justice Nyako reviewed the Supreme Court judgement and found no such stipulation.

Kanu reportedly expressed a refusal to stand trial in any Nigerian court, claiming such action would violate Nigerian and international law.
