'Renewed Shege' Trends As Petrol Price Rises Above N600 Per Litre In Two Months

The adjustment of the petrol pump price from N540 to N617 per litre has sparked anger and condemnation among some Nigerians.

AFNews reports that on Tuesday, Nigerians woke up to an increase in pump price as many fuel stations in the FCT and other parts of the country had adjusted their pump to reflect the new price regime.

The new pump price comes less than two months after the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, had announced an upward review of the product from N194 to N488 and N555.

This followed the announcement of the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu during his May 29 inauguration.

Reacting to the increment, many Nigerians took to their social media handles, describing the situation as insensitive and wicked.

They also said the president has deviated from his campaign mantra of 'Renewed Hope' to 'renewed shege', a term loosely translated as renewed suffering by the APC administration.

Commenting on the increase, a presenter with Arise TV, Rufai Oseni said, "people that orchestrated chaos over 65 Naira per litre are now prevailing over 617 Naira per litre. God must have a sense of humour.ÔÇØ

Another Twitter user, @_ofHarrison, also mocked Nigerians who voted for Mr Tinubu against the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

He said, "830 naira to a dollar and 617 naira per litre Ronu! Renewed Shege Lokan. Peter Obi is being taught serious lessons by BATIDIOTS

Another user, @Yemiefash, wondered how the PMS price skyrocketed within two months.

"The same petrol that was 190 naira per litre two months ago is now 617 naira per litre. Is this the renewed hope?,ÔÇØ he queried.

Another user, @King_inspires, said: "617 Naira per litre, and they say it is good you guys should suffer now... But I have this to say, you see that suffer ehn, e go remain as far as it is APC...nothing good can come from APC...Never!.

@KhaleedSZN vowed not to fuel his generator set with the current price of petrol.

"Not upto a month and Tinubu times are this hard!! No way in hell am I buying fuel for 617 naira. Once my phone goes off now na till Nepa brings light nextÔÇØ, he lamented.

However, another user, @Egi_Nupe, urged the government to engage in massive sensitization to counter misinformation against the subsidy removal.

He said, "Let's tell ourselves the bitter truth, the price of PMS will keep rising or remain like this. It is now a deregulated market because subsidy is GONE, and we may never get back to the old ways of buying it for N65 or N180.

"What is next is not to promote propaganda or agenda against the government but to promote a wider awareness of the reality on ground and adjust accordingly. Painful but necessary.ÔÇØ
